Who should consider the Comprehensive Carrier Panel?

Simply everyone considering having children.

Prospective couples, especially related, who want to understand their carrier status before getting married (premarital genetic screening).
Cancer-free individuals with a family history of cancer, especially if multiple members are affected or if cancer developed before the age of 50.
Men and women, especially related, who want to understand their risk of having a child with a genetic disorder.
Men and women with a family history of a genetic disorder.

The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommend offering genetic carrier screening to all women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

What if the test shows that I’m a carrier?

For most people, the Comprehensive Carrier Screen provides a very welcome peace of mind.

If your test shows that you are a carrier of a genetic condition, the next step is usually to test your partner to see if they are also a carrier of the same condition, a situation that will put your future children at a risk of this genetic disease.

If you and your partner are both carriers of the same genetic condition, recommendations and detailed description of your options will be provided.
